STUDENTS WHO HAVE BEEN HERE FOR SPRING BREAK (WITH PROPER APPROVAL) MAY STILL MOVE OUT COMPLETELY AT THIS TIME AND LEAVE THEIR KEY ON THEIR DRESSER. A LETTER FROM DEAN OF THE COLLEGE, CARLOS ALAMO: " Dear all, I am writing in light of the executive order issued by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo earlier this afternoon, which bans all nonessential gatherings of any size for any reason. As a result, Vassar is suspending all pick-up of personal belongings effective immediately. However, students who were planning to leave campus may still do so. I apologize for the constant changing of this information, but the situation in New York is shifting rapidly. Although we know this is a difficult decision, we are prioritizing the public’s health in light of the Governor’s actions today. The Governor’s order is in effect until April 18, at which time we will reassess the situation and communicate any revised plans. Additionally, Governor Cuomo has ordered a 100 percent reduction in the workforce of all nonessential businesses. This means we are no longer recommending using an outside company. It is our understanding that the moving company will not be able to continue to provide any services given the requirements of the governor’s order. As you’ve seen, news and guidance around COVID-19 is changing very rapidly and we are doing our best to adjust in real-time. Your personal belongings are important and I want to reiterate that we are committed to working on an appropriate process for you to retrieve them. I have heard from many of you throughout the day - thank you for the important feedback. It’s an important part of this process. Ensuring that you are able to retrieve your belongings in a way that feels safe, unrushed, and as equitable as possible is essential. Please know we will safeguard your belongings during this pandemic while we work through the appropriate planning phases. It is challenging to develop long-term, multifaceted plans when confronted with this pandemic that changes daily. This is new territory for all of us, so thank you for the patience and empathy as we do our very best to support the Vassar community. Today’s emails may lead to feelings of uncertainty and anxiety. Please know we recognize this. We are in this together and will work through it, together. If you have an urgent need that requires immediate attention, please contact the Office of Residential Life at reslife@vassar.edu and we will do our best to accommodate you when possible taking into consideration the governor’s new directive. Things are changing quickly and we will continue to keep the lines of communication open throughout this process. As we approach the April 18th date that the Governor has outlined, we will share more details on the revised plans. In the meantime, we hope all of you and your families stay safe and healthy. warmly, Carlos Alamo-Pastrana Dean of the College Associate Professor of Sociology and Latin American and Latina/o Studies" The Office of Residential Life oversees all aspects of a Vassar education that pertain to living on campus. The Residential Life staff provides a safe, comfortable, and educational space for members of the residential community, coordinates activities that complement academic pursuits, advocates for and advises students, and strives to empower students to become leaders on campus and beyond.
